Happy New Year!
Wow – we’re coasting through the school year! As educators, we are reminding ourselves of the energy that is required of us and of the students we work with to constantly adjust and re-adjust to the ever-changing state of things. We’re giving ourselves some grace and also taking lessons from middle-schoolers on the importance of silliness to make it all a little easier.
Launching our Winter Donor Drive!
Want to play an impactful role in supporting our programs? Consider becoming a monthly sustainer and supporting us through turbulent times. Despite the challenges that the past two years have brought to all of our lives, our programs are thriving thanks to the generosity of our community of supporters. We have already had the privilege of reaching thousands of students this school year, not to mention the many community members that have gotten involved in our UpCycle program and internships at the Bikery. In 2022 we will keep expanding our network and making bicycling and all its joys accessible to all who deserve it (read: everybody). Check out our campaign page, and share it with a few pals while you’re at it!
Cycles is hiring for a Bikery coordinator!
After more than five years as part of our Cycles family, our wonderful bike mechanic pro Benji will be moving on from their time with us later this winter. This means that we are looking for a super rad, community-minded bike enthusiast to fill their role as our Bikery coordinator! This position includes staff and operational management of the Bikery as well as face to face involvement with community members through work at the shop. More details about the position and how to apply here.
A View from Drive Your Bike!
How could we pass up the opportunity to share this view? We’ve been spending a lot of time at Wood Middle School in Alameda this month, and now that the rains have passed it seems there’s no better place to be. On our off-campus rides, we’ve embraced the leisure that being by the beach inspires – riding slowly, taking in the views across the Bay, and even stopping for a few minutes to play in the sand and scavenge for shells and other cool finds. We love connecting our bodies with nature and with bikes; put it all together and boom, happy hearts!
Thank You!
We have loads of gratitude to share, as always! This season, we’re feeling especially thankful for the support we’ve gotten from:
The Nicholson Family Foundation
Clif Bar Family Foundation
Banks Family Foundation
State Farm
The grants we’ve gotten from these donors have been integral in supporting our bike clubs at three Oakland schools – a huge thank you from us and our students!
During the month of December, we had the opportunity to partner with Tunitas Carryall, a dope WOC owned business creating hand-made bike bags. We are super grateful for the support they showed to us and our community – thank you!
And of course, thank you to our network of supporters for being with us on this winding road. Extra special shoutout to our current monthly sustainers:
